Sunday's Obituary: Ralph Vernon LeMaster (1922-1996)

Ralph V. LeMaster, 73, Elkhart, a native of Portland, died Tuesday evening in the emergency room at Elkhart General Hospital.


He retired from NIPSCO in 1983 after working there for 27 years.


A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, LeMaster was a member of the Grace Bible Church.


Born May 2, 1922, in Portland, he was married Dec. 16, 1942 to Donnabel Fields, who survives.


Surviving besides his wife are three sons, R. Vernon LeMaster, Greenville, S.C., Robert and Jeff LeMaster, both of Elkhart; one sister, Doris Shaneyfelt, Portland; one brother, Dale LeMaster, Springfield, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.


Services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Westbrook-Metz and Clouse Funeral Home, Elkhart, with Rev. Mike Fisher officiating.  Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery with military graveside services.


Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.


Memorials may be made to the Grace Bible Church.

MISS LEMASTER DIES SATURDAY


Two Weeks Illness Fatal To 12-Year-Old Portland Girl


Patty Lou LeMaster, 12, of West High street, died at the Jay County Hospital at 3:30 Saturday afternoon following a two weeks illness of flu and complications.  Her condition had been critical for the past week.


The child was born in Madison township on December 2, 1932, the daughter of Chesley and Clara (Burkey) LeMaster, who survive.


Also surviving are the three brothers; Donald in the Navy in the South Pacific; Ralph in the army now home on furlough and Dale in the Marines stationed at San Diego, Califf., one sister, Mrs. Doris Shaneyfelt of Salamonia and the grandfather, John Burkey of East Walnut street.


Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Salamonia Methodist church with Rev. H.G. Perry officiating.  Burial will be in the Salamonia cemetery.


The body will remain at the Williamson funeral home where friends may call until the hour of the funeral.

Sunday's Obituary : Clara Louise (Burkey) LeMaster (1894-1985)

Clara LeMaster


Clara L. LeMaster, 90, 316 W. Main St., Portland, died Wednesday evening at the Portland Community Care Center East following a brief illness.


Born Dec. 16, 1894, in Jay County, she was the daughter of John and Leafie (Beebe) Burkey.  She was married in 1913 to Chesley F. LeMaster, who died Aug. 9, 1960.


Surviving are two sons, Ralph LeMaster, Elkhart, and Dale W. LeMaster, Springfield, Mass.; a daughter, Mrs. Doris M. Shaneyfelt, Portland; two sisters, Mrs. Etta Greaf, Portland, and Mrs. Clyde (Mabel) Murray, Goshen; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.


Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.  Rev. John Bellante will officiate.  Burial will be in the Salamonia Cemetery.


Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.  The family will be present at the funeral home from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Jay County Men Respond

JAY COUNTY MEN RESPOND


Portland, Ind. May 3 - Jay County sent eight more recruits to Fort Wayne this afternoon to join the army.  All are from Salamonia, a town of less than 200 population.  They are Forest and Orville Chew, brothers; John F. and Guy F. Kantner, cousins; John M. Bischoff, Ray C. McKinley, Gerard W. LeMaster, David Clyde Andrews.  Daniel Shaneyfelt and Isaac J. Garringer, both of Boundary, accompanied them, expecting to enlist.  Four new enlistments were recorded in Company G, I.N.G., this city, today.  They are Orville Upp and Frank Fiekle, this city, Oscar Shafer and Frank Sientz, both of Pennville.  Fred Chronister, private in the local company, has been elected second lieutenant of the new guard company being formed at Decatur.

Gerald W. LeMASTER (name misspelled as "Gerard"), was my paternal granduncle, son of Luman and Barbara (WEHRLY) LeMASTER.


John M. BISCHOFF, was a foster child of my great-granduncle, Arthur R. LeMASTER.


Forest and Orville CHEW, were my paternal 1st cousins, 3 times removed, sons of Dr. William and Emma (STRAIGHT) CHEW.
